《紅日》是一部紀(jì)實(shí)性的電影，它可以堪稱中國(guó)軍事文學(xué)創(chuàng)作歷史上的一座重要的里程碑。小說(shuō)的作者吳強(qiáng)是參加過(guò)二打漣水、萊蕪、孟良崮等戰(zhàn)役的現(xiàn)場(chǎng)指揮員，時(shí)任華野六縱政治部宣傳部長(zhǎng)。影片的故事描寫也是圍繞著六縱經(jīng)歷編寫的。
片子中著重描寫了六縱參加的三次戰(zhàn)役。從二打漣水開(kāi)篇，此戰(zhàn)我軍被74師打敗，漣水丟失，王必成受到陳毅的嚴(yán)厲批評(píng)，差點(diǎn)撤職。因此，六縱恨死了74師，發(fā)誓要報(bào)仇。第二場(chǎng)萊蕪戰(zhàn)役，此戰(zhàn)我軍大勝，六縱也繳獲甚多，不過(guò)此戰(zhàn)74師沒(méi)有參加。最后是本片的重點(diǎn)孟良崮戰(zhàn)役
