They are fatter, fuzzier and more leisurely than their sisters bees. Compared to their cousin wasps, they are much less aggressive and awe inspiring. Compared to bees, these social insects have long lacked research, despite living in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and South America. Some tropical species have formed communities that last for several years, but in other places, only the summer New Queens can survive until next spring.
