Chaturanga "tells a love story that falls into a world of conflicting thoughts. In the pursuit of the meaning of life, the protagonist Sachi shifts from radical positivism to religious mysticism. However, his search ultimately only brought about a disheartening disillusionment. This is because he cannot reconcile abstract ideals with the powerful presence of two women in life. One of them is Damini, a young Hindu widow, and the other is Nanibala, the abandoned mistress of Sachi's own brother. Sacish tried to convince himself that Nanibala was just a helpless woman in need of his "rescue". Similarly, in his later religious stage, he pretended that the widow Damini was just a natural temptation and had to avoid spiritual redemption at all costs.
