這首歌曲是由女作曲家Carrie Minetta Jacobs-Bond（1862-1946）1909年于加利福尼亞州河濱市（Riverside, California）的一家名叫米申酒店（Mission Inn）的教會酒店中所作。歌詞創(chuàng)作于一天黃昏她在位于4樓的酒店房間內(nèi)欣賞日落時，而曲調(diào)則是三個月后漫步于莫哈韋沙漠（Mojave Desert）時所寫。這首歌隨后成為了她銷量最好的一首歌，經(jīng)翻唱、演繹無數(shù)，而米申酒店的鐘琴也年復(fù)一年，每晚演奏這首歌曲。
