Agadez in Niger has long been the starting point for people smugglers to transfer immigrants to Libya through the desert. Under pressure from Europe, the Niger government has been working hard to combat human smuggling, but the local economy has almost no other options. Those who give up smuggling usually end up going to gold mining. But this is a difficult and dangerous job, and only a few people can get rich. Former human smuggler Ibrahim is now transporting supplies to gold miners in the desert. He and his son Abdousalam carried bags of broken stones back in their Toyota pickup truck. They know the desert and how to endure its extreme conditions, but they don't consider mining themselves. "Once you obtain gold, it will change you. You are no longer friends, everyone is for yourself." At the same time, smuggling activities continue, and Karim Sayad's camera follows a truck loaded with refugees. But he also captured the beauty of the desert and the resilience of its inhabitants.
