Stephen Ashe is a renowned criminal lawyer who resides in San Francisco and is deeply loved by his free spirited daughter Jane. After sending out the invitation, snobbish Granny Ash warned Jane not to let Stephen drink that night. As people were concerned, Stephen did not comply with her demands. When he came here with Ace Wilfang, she and her family were shocked. Ace Wilfang is a gangster character, and Stephen is defending him in a murder trial. Shortly after Stephen introduced Ace to his family, he was shocked by their lack of hospitality and left with Ace. Jane was also dissatisfied with her family's reaction to Ace, so she followed them and left her indifferent fianc é Dwight Winthrop behind. On the way home by car, Jane told Ace that he was the first truly exciting man she had ever met. Their driving was interrupted when their windshield was hit by a bullet from the Hardy thug who wanted to kill Ace. Ace and Jane started a relationship, but Ace requested Stephen's permission to marry his daughter. Stephen refused Ace's request, but Jane continued to meet with him. One night, Stephen returned home drunk after the casino went bankrupt. He made an agreement with Jane to change his bad habits. Although Stephen promised to quit drinking, Jane swore to quit the troublesome Ace. Then, the father and daughter went on a vacation in the mountains to get rid of the temptation at home, but once they returned, they fell into the habits of the past. When Jane scolded Ace for leaving him, his relationship with Ace became violent. After attacking her, Ace demanded that she marry him. Jane refused and returned to Dwight, who had been taking care of Grandma Ash on her deathbed. When Dwight witnessed Ace's rough treatment of Jane, he became angry and shot him to death. Dwight then personally reported to the police and, in order to protect Jane, told them that he had shot Ace for gambling debts. During the trial, Dwight's defense struggled until Stephen arrived and took over. Stephen immediately claimed that the murder was the result of temporary insanity, and then declared that it was not Dwight who should be tried, but himself. Stephen believed that if he hadn't allowed Jane to see Ace from the beginning, the entire tragic event could have been avoided. After calling Jane to the witness stand, Stephen became so excited that he collapsed, suffered a heart attack, and died in his daughter's arms. The jury subsequently found Dwight not guilty and he and Jane went to New York, planning to start a new life there.
