The film tells the story of six Dorset laborers who were expelled to Australia and formed the epic Tolpuddle Martyrs Union in 1830; Comrades; Described as one of the lost masterpieces in European cinema. It appeared in 1987 and received critical acclaim, but quickly disappeared. In my opinion, Bill Douglas's masterpieces are on par with those of Tarkovsky, Bresson, and Bergman. Within a few minutes, the audience was immersed in a story full of love and passion, unity and bravery Comrades is not just a one-dimensional political debate. Far from it. It's not just a historical epic. This is undoubtedly the highest level of character oriented storytelling, despite the many layers involved in this movie. It blends and transcends narrative drama and avant-garde, urgently requiring further viewing. In many ways, "Comrades" is an experimental and visionary film, as well as a tribute to previous films. Interestingly, the famous actor at the time - Douglas did not want to appear in the movie, but was forced to use them - was selected as a wealthy class, while the completely unknown actor was selected as a martyr and his family. Director Bill Douglas is a person who understands poverty and struggle. He grew up in extreme poverty in a poor mining village called Newcraighall in the suburbs of Edinburgh at the time. His autobiography "Trilogy" is his only other film work, filmed in a now defunct Newcraigholl after the war. But this is really a job! This is Scotland's greatest film achievement to date. Even the movie script of the trilogy itself is a literary work.
