奧威爾的小說和他本人的身份是矛盾的。他是一個堅定的左派，一個社會主義者，一個支持集體主義意識形態(tài)的人，卻寫了一部可怕的集體主義社會反烏托邦小說。在寫小說之前的1936年，西班牙內(nèi)戰(zhàn)爆發(fā)，奧威爾以國際反法西斯主義志愿者的身份參加了由西班牙共產(chǎn)黨領(lǐng)導的共和軍，后來受到蘇聯(lián)大清洗的影響，奧威爾從西班牙死里逃生。這段經(jīng)歷被記錄在了奧威爾的回憶錄《向加泰羅尼亞致敬》里，揭露了恐怖的反人性戰(zhàn)爭和謊言
