In the first scene Eva and Magoda mentioned the reason they went to America: making money,meeting some money bag and getting married.The former is common as American Dream in that age,the latter is understandable as every girl's dream:settling down with good guys.
Why is such basic human needs lead to tragedy?
Maybe they misconceive happiness only as material satisfaction in the first place which makes the motivation somehow enslaved by lust.
