開頭一句已經(jīng)道盡人世：英國人不會愛人，所以都愛養(yǎng)狗。是典型的英國式自嘲。
一個年過五十的鰥夫，收養(yǎng)了一只不宜馴養(yǎng)的小狗Tulip，自由散漫的老人對狗沒有約束力，Tulip便個性無比，尷尬無奈不足為道。在數(shù)次受到獸醫(yī)的嘲諷后，他終于遇到了一位有經(jīng)驗的獸醫(yī)女士，也是第一次，因為Tulip的胡鬧打罵了她。老太太說，把狗給我。他交出繩索，老太太牽著它進(jìn)了診室。一會兒，她出來，他奇異于狗異乎尋常的安靜。她說：沒關(guān)系，你的狗性格很好，她是這樣的愛你，所以在你在的時候，總是很強(qiáng)烈地想守衛(wèi)你，僅此而已。
