Jean Renoir’s trenchant and eloquent dissection of the futility of war is conspicuous with no combat scenes. Set in WWI, it follows the experiences of two French POWs, Lieutenant Maréchal (Gabin) and Captain de Bo?ldieu (Fresnay), who are transferred from one German prisoner camp to another, however, they never abandon their hope of escaping, being a docile prisoner is sheer out of question, but it takes a great sacrifice to eventually pull their plan off.
